Low Testosterone

Do you suffer from low testosterone?   We offer a comprehensive range of treatments to restore your testosterone levels, including injections, patches, gel, oral tablets and the newest treatment, the implantation of pellets.

Testosterone is a male hormone that is responsible for the proper development of male sexual characteristics. It is also important for maintaining muscle bulk, adequate levels of red blood cells, bone growth, sexual function and a sense of well-being.  Men with low testosterone (hypogonadism, low T) present with symptoms of fatigue, muscle wasting, low energy and libido, weight gain and depression. They may also have difficulty concentrating and a decreased sense of well-being.

If you are suffering from low testosterone, you may also notice physical changes such as softer muscles and more body fat, loss of body hair, smaller, softer testicles and larger breasts. As testosterone helps a man’s body make sperm, low testosterone is linked with a low sperm count and infertility. Low testosterone also weakens bones, and is a common cause of osteoporosis, or brittle bone disease.

Getting older is the most common reason testosterone levels dip. The amount of testosterone in a man’s body starts declining naturally after age 30 and continues throughout life. Other causes include Type 2 diabetes, liver or kidney disease, pituitary gland problems, testicle injuries, inflammatory diseases, stress, alcoholism, obesity and some medications and cancer treatments.

To determine whether you have low testosterone, we measure the amount of testosterone in your blood. Because testosterone levels fluctuate throughout the day, several measurements need to be taken to detect a deficiency. Doctors prefer, if possible, to test levels early in the morning since this is when testosterone levels are at their highest.

There is often a place for testosterone replacement if your testosterone is low. Replacement options include daily application of gels and lotions. Another option is injection of testosterone every other week. There are some advantages and disadvantages to all these options. We also offers an effective and relatively new treatment for low testosterone. This is the implantation of pellets (Testopel) under the skin to release testosterone slowly over 4-6 months. Testopel has many advantages, including being an easy office procedure with an injection site that heals quickly.
